“You know why it’s hard to be happy? It’s because we refuse to let go of the things that make us sad.” — Lupytha Hermin
Really! Often it’s just that simple. We absolutely refuse to let go of the negative thoughts that bring us down. We’re mad about them and we want to “enjoy” being mad about them.
Well, that’s our choice! We can certainly do that. But, unfortunately, it’s a choice that doesn’t serve us. We beat our heads against a wall and keep ourselves miserable because we simply don’t want to let go of some past hurt. It’s simply not worth it! As A Course in Miracles tells us, “You can be right, or you can be happy.” Being right about making somebody else wrong will never make you happy. But that’s a choice you can make if you insist.
We can’t dwell on negative thoughts and emotions and feel good. The mind can’t focus on two ideas at the same time, and especially not on two opposing ideas.
If you find yourself in this situation and you want to change it, acknowledge the “sad” idea you’ve been focusing on, acknowledge that it’s not what you want but it’s what seems to be, and then decide to be happy anyway. Nothing is worth losing your peace of mind. Everything in your life will go better when you’re at peace.
Bad things happen to all of us, but they don’t have to keep happening to us by our reliving them over and over and dwelling on the past. Let them go and choose peace now. It’s a choice you can make, if you’re willing to do so. Just do it!
