This fascinating, brilliant 20-minute video narrates the history of the "Amen Break," a six-second drum sample from the b-side of a chart-topping single from 1969. This sample was used extensively in early hiphop and sample-based music, and became the basis for drum-and-bass and jungle music -- a six-second clip that spawned several entire subcultures. Nate Harrison's 2004 video is a meditation on the ownership of culture, the nature of art and creativity, and the history of a remarkable music clip.

How is this an ego massage? This is about an important part of musical history.

I think dissecting music like this is purely an exercise in ego massage. Ah Men ya FOOLZ!

If you didn't see the relevance of this to music overall, then you are a moron. I feel ashamed that you're calling yourself a musician, and almost makes me want to stop playing music just so I can no loner be grouped with you. I hope you enjoy insulting others for not being relevant while you yourself die in obscurity.

Stank, this isn't talking about drumming - this is an analytical thesis on the impact of a beat that has influenced decades of genres of musical stylings. The research is respectable and taught me something I didn't know before. Nobody is asking you to exercise your intellect, and this artistic documentarist has not insulted you in any way. If drumming is what you do then you'd be best doing that.

i agree with the no1 can own a beat statement.but csaying that sampling is for 'lazy people and non muscians' is a very ignorant thing to say.
stormjh1989 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
wtf, i don't even know what you're trying to say there.
stankology (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
some people talk about drums, others drum. Drummers tend to the latter. Fools like this, elucidate their nonsense, in a pathetic attempt to make themselves feel somehow relevant, this has nothin to do with music and is thus for any musician, a total waste of time!

Can you imagine the music today if the Amen Break wasn't released?
