Eco-friendly mall opens in JBBy ZAZALI MUSAJOHOR BARU: The newly-opened Sutera Mall in Taman Sutera Utama is an environment-friendly shopping complex in Johor Baru.The RM75mil complex harvests rainwater for use in washrooms, watering plants and washing car park areas.Going green: The outdoor garden of Sutera Mall in Taman Sutera Utama, Johor Baru. Shoppers are pleasantly surprised by indoor gardens in the washrooms.Exotic tropical plants such as giant ferns, bird nest ferns, wild ferns, caladiums and monkey pitcher plants adorn the gardens.During the day, sunlight enters through the translucent roof, thus no electrical lights are needed to brighten the washrooms.Going green helps us save on water and electricity bills, said Tanah Sutera Development Sdn Bhd general manager Steven Shum.Tanah Sutera was created by a consortium of local and Singapore-based companies Permodalan Nasional Bhd, Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera, Keppel Land, CapitaLand and Lee Rubber Co (Pte) Ltd.Shum said that maintenance for the washrooms was minimal as the plants absorb odours and the walls need no painting as lichens green them naturally. http://thestar.com.my/metro/st... said that tenants and shoppers gave their thumbs up for the green-concept washrooms.He said the concept was not new as it had been practised in kampungs where villagers live in harmony with nature.Most users take photos of the washrooms as they do not expect them with indoor gardens, said Shum.The complex also boasts a landscaped outdoor garden with rocks, fish ponds, cascading waterfalls and covered walkways.The area is a favourite meeting place for shoppers and visitors who relax and enjoy the greenery.
