Classical music for your day.Balakirev was part of 'The Five', a small group of Russian composers that consisted of Mussorgsky, Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov, Cui and himself. He had not much specialised music training but trained and taught himself, studying the works of western composers. What he seemed to do lots was incorporate traditional Russian folk tunes / songs into his music. We can see that in his symphonic tone poem called 'Russia', his second symphony and this, written in 1857/58.painting: "A Yard in Moscow, II" by Vassili Dimitrievich PolenovMili Balakirev - (1837-1910)- Overture on Three Russian Themes - 9'10"performed by: The Philharmonia with Yevgeny Svetlanov, conductorlabel: Hyperion
