Quietism is fundamentally a pantheistic belief that the highest good and goal is to attain a state of perpetual passivity, and by doing so, be lifted beyond passions into apatheia. This is counter to Jewish and Christian traditions. The practice of Centering Prayer is a direct outgrowth of the Christian practice of Lectio Divina. The fourth stage of Lectio Divina, Contemplatio, is not proposed as a perpetual blissful state, but a moment of quiet prayer, the fruits of which reflect in one's life.

this has all the markings of Quietism....which if you study CHurch councils was condemmed as a Heresey.

I was so happy to discover that Father Keating is on youtube. I appreciated his opening remarks on this particular video - Centering Prayer Guidelines - about how you can't get it wrong because God is interested more in your intentions than He is in your method. This is just what I needed to hear because I was getting stuck trying too hard to follow the right technique. joy

Please read Father Thomas Keatings book, Open Mind, Open Heart - it is completely devoted to Centering Prayer

That was very interesting. Im currently reading T. Keating's book "Grace at the Center". I'd be interested in knowing if anyone out there has had success or fully understands how this prayer is meant to work...please email me!Matthew
