They are not over-rated. Personally, I like Clapton and Hendrix about the same. They tie at 1 and 2 on my list. Van halen didn't have that big of an impression on me, either did jimmy page, and i don't know who petrucci is. Steve vai and Satch are also in my top 20. All i am trying to say is, OPINIONS ARE LIKE ASSHOLES, EVERYONE HAS ONE!!! (PERSONALLY, I -and other people-DON'T WANT TO SEE OR HEAR YOURS.)Sorry to put it that way, but it needed to be said.

Personally, I think a great musician like Clapton goes beyond being technical. People like Vai, Petrucci, Satriani, etc.. have excellent techniques but they will hardly be remembered as rock icons.

Without a doubt EVH and petrucci are vastly more technical and they do deserve a fair amount of credit, on par with Jimi and Clapton even, but to me Hendrix, Clapton, Page, and all the classics should get all that credit not because they are somehow superior but because they re-invented rock and roll. But I know most other ppl dont see it that way...but thats just how i see it

clapton and hendrix were good for their time and i agree without them EVH, Vai, Petrucci wouldn't be playing but people have to stop acting like they're still the best. EVH is way more technical than both those and Petrucci is amazing as well

I wont deny that they are ungodly good. but think about it, if you were to ask those guys "who is one of youre influences" (jimmy page aside)and they will have either Clapton or Hendrix as an idol. Jimi and Eric set the bar for music after them that is why they are held in high regaurd.
