Can the polygraph machine really scientifically measure if someone is lying, or are all those graphs and numbers just pseudoscience in the service of law enforcement? Can we tell if someone is lying to us by their body language or facial expressions? Michael Shermer puts both the polygraph and lie detection to the test in this dramatic episode that features O.J.'s jury consultant lie detection expert.

Polygraphs are never 100% accurate. If the person is nervous the polygraph will give a false reading, or if a person gets angery for being asked a certain guestion the polygraph will give a false reading. If the polygraph was any good, think of all the money they could save from having trials. The only place for a polygraph is on top of the scrape pile..

The polygraph test merely records physical changes, that's it. The lie detector is junk science. Even if it is 95% accurate, that is not good enough. No way. Would you want this stupid bitch judging you?

Or what if you react strongly to the key questions, knowing that even if you are innocent the mere "ok, this is it" reaction might give out an undesired stress response? Tricky.

Understand, that what is being contested here is not that the polygraph can detect when someone is lying but rather that it can do so with near 100% accuracy. I personally have always disliked polygraphs because they can be used as a manipulative tactic against citizens. I personally would refuse to subject myself to a polygraph, even if I was innocent, and by doing so would incriminate myself. I think they need to be removed from the legal/judiciary process.
