The sad thing about this is that the right-wing media criticized the citizens on N.O. for not leaving...what they didn't seem to understand is that 9% of the population (generally the black poor) had no access to a vehicle. There is widespread poverty in N.O. and its the poorest Americans, the sick and the elderly that were trapped and died in Katrina.

I remember that awful time, and although I was in Mississippi, even there the only news we had was from WWL-AM. The people there stayed through the storm and some of the calls were beyond heartbreaking. Sadly, WWL didn't record that period, and I doubt anyone listening did either considering the circumstances we were in. It was a blessing to have people like Garland Robinette there as a lone voice in a dark and chaotic time.

I was in Iraq when this whole thing happened so i never really got a feel for what was going on and have been trying to research into it more. I can't express how bad i feel for everyone who had to endure that.

Garland Robinette was of course an anchor/reporter @ WWL-TV Channel 4 for 20 years (1970-90), where he was married to coanchor Angela Hill @ for a while. He now runs The Think Tank at another WWL station: that on radio, WWL-AM The Big 870 and WWL-FM 105.3.Anchormen shouldn't cry... :(
