Cohen wrote this song. This is from around 1984-1985. He had written this before then - but it was in this era the song became popular. In Shrek it was sung by John Cale. In the late 90's Jeff Buckley does a pretty fantastic version. It becomes more popular when he dies soon thereafter in an accidental drowning.

This is a poetic piece written by him about the struggles of life. Its a masterpiece.

After hearing this as the trailer for BBC drama, I had to find it. Having found Jeff Buckley's version on YouTube, I carried on looking and found a version with the finalists of the German version of Pop Idol (the guy "shrek" who won World Idol)... It is by far the best version around. I just need to find a way to download it now!

Amazing songwriting indeed.. and yes it's a nice song, but listening this after jeff buckley's version.. it's weird.. I prefer jeff's version
